Under 10`s

Friendly against Euxton
Eccleston 237- Euxton 258
On a windy and somewhat un-cricket like day, the new under 10`s began what is hoped to be their long and successful cricket careers. Everyone of them played creditably. James Hamer and Alisatair Gaskell gave us a steady start , and Mark Crowley and James Hugo kept it going. More solid batting from George and Callum kept us moving and the Boardman brothers , Jack and Liam did well too. The star of the show was Emily Weetman, who hit 17 runs, which meant poor Sam Norris didn`t get to face much of the bowling. A real positive was that we only lost 2 wickets!!! On the bowling side again Emily shone taking the only Euxton wicket to fall  and forcing an Euxton player to retire hurt injured. But everyone else did well, in what is a hard discipline to learn, and Alistair in particular showed how far he`s come on, in the last two weeks, in terms of improving his action. Fielding, well you expect some mis-fields and there were some, but hey....! Finally Callum kept really well on debut!

Eccleston 203-6 lost to Chorley 240-4
Finally the competative season got under way, on a bitterly bitterly cold night, and straight away a number of lads found out just how hard cricket really is! The James` -Hugo and Hamer set us off and we remained neutral, but the the wheels came off as the next pair were bowled 4 times. Sam Norris hit the only 4 of our innings and the two new lads , Evan and Alex both batted creditably. Emily and Calum made sure we had a + score. BAtting remains a huge learning curve. A couple of early wickets (including a good catch by Wk Callum ) gave us some hope, but ultimately the opposition were too strong. There were good bowling performances from Mark Crowley, James Hamer and Emily. The lesson starteth here!

Eccleston 254-4 beat Leyland 211-8
Lessons learnt! A much improved performance from every player in the team. Sound start from Evan and Alexander and great batting from Sam Norris, who with Callum put on 17 runs in their 4 overs. Another plus 12 from George and Jack, and Mark and James added 10 runs. Emily and Jmes Hugo (captain for the day) took us to a respectable 254. We bowled and fielded much better, with first wickets for George and Alexander. Two run outs with good thinking from Emily and James Hamer, and Emily finished the match with 2 wickets including a caught and bowled that would put some under 15 fielding to shame.  A great leap forward form the previous game....keep learning kids !

Eccleston 225 v Euxton 216

A highly enjoyable friendly took place against Euxton. Eccleston batted first and benefited from solid partnerships right the way through. Particularly good batting came from Alex and Evan and Emily and Callum. Eccleston finished their innings on 225.
In reply Euxton made steady progress and with two overs left appeared to be the likely winners as they had reached 244. However Eccleston battled back spectacularly with good bowling from Emily and some excellent catching restricting the opposition to a finishing score of 216.
Highlights of a fantastic display in the field were an outstanding catch by Evan, 2 good catches from Sam and good bowling from everyone. However the best performance was from Callum who took 4 excellent catches as wicketkeeper
The victory sparked happy celebrations from all and also kept a large crowd highly entertained!!

Eccleston 230 v Wrea Green 239
At the beginning of the season I would have taken this result, but the improvement shown to date, actually left me disappointed. Batsmen need to start valuing their wicket , we lost 7 of them, they lost 4 of them, and they were even willing to put parts of their bodies they shouldn`t in front of the stumps to ensure they don`t lose wickets. Good battiing perfomances came from Alex Weaver, Sam Norris, Emily and Callum. Good bowling performances came from Mark Crowley, James Hugo and Emily. Practice will focus on batting and fielding, because we droped some important catches too.

League Match V Leyland
Lost the toss and were asked to bat. We set off well with a good partnership between A Weetman (42) and S Bibby(20).  A Hooley(34) carried on the good work after Spen was out. Alex and Adam H were both out in the last over. We finished with a respectable 104.
The bowling was opened by A Sexton and N Clarke, Leyland started slowly picking up singles. After losing their first wicket though a run out from a direct hit from Adam S, Leyland captain L Hurt came in,he played a lot of big shots and moved the score on quickly. With the score on 101 Hurt was out to a good catch by Josh Pope off the bowling of A Hooley. Leyland lost 6 wickets before passing our total with an over and a couple of balls to spare.
Cup Match New Longton V Eccleston Cup match
Having won the toss New Longton were asked to bat on a pitch with a very wet outfield, but a reasonably hard wicket.
N Clarke and M Shelley opened the bowling, Shelley taking the first wicket a good stumping by Alex. Nick was replaced by Adam Sexton who took 2 wickets for only 1 run in his first 2 overs, finishing with 2 for 15.After a bit of indifferent bowling J Pope came on to bowl, bowling a good line and length he removed New Longtons top scorer Dillon(49) in his first over, finishing the game with figures of 3 for 5, N/L inning closed on 98.
Eccleston started tentatively on a pitch that seemed to becoming  more  lively, one bowler in particular was bowling a reasonable length and the ball was rising to head height,
after hitting a couple of 4s Spencer was first to go, Alex followed not long after to a ball that seemed not to bounce.  Adam Hooley and Nick Clarke came and whet then Josh Pope and Adam Sexton came together and tried to push the score on. Adam lost his wicket on the next to last ball of the game, a catch at slip after the ball had deflected off the wicket keepers arm. Game ended disappointingly with the score on 74

 League V Vernon Carus 01/06
On the sunniest and warmest night of the season so far Eccleston took to the field first. Opening the bowling were M Shelley  and A Hooley.
Shell bowled 3 overs for 11, Hools took the first wicket of the game with his second ball, finishing with 1 for 8 off 3.
J Pope came in to the attack and contributed well, bowling Vernons best batter who had scored 21.
A Russell was another who performed well bowling 4 overs for12, he was joined by A Sexton who once again started with a wicket maiden, Adam bowled 3 overs for 2 runs. With some poor running and some good fielding Vernons lost 3 wickets to run outs, their innings closed  on 75 for 6.
A Weetman and J Pope opened the Eccleston innings scoring steadily. Josh was the first to loose his wicket having scored 12.
S Bibby Joined Alex at the crease, unfortunately he was bowled having scored 2, meanwhile Alex was scoring steadily, who was then joined by A Hooley.
The pace now started to pick up with both batsmen finding the gaps and hitting boundaries, the game finished with Adam driving the ball straight back for 4.
Alex finished unbeaten on 32 and Adam 21

Thursday 11th June  Home V Chorley

On another good evening for cricket Eccleston took to the field first, opening the bowling once again was A Hooley and once again taking a wicket in his first over.  M Shelley (2 -0-13-0) started at the other end, he was replaced by J Pope (2-0-8-0) who in turn was replaced by D Tracey(3-0-14-0). Mean while Hools finished his spell taking another wicket  finishing with very good figures 4 overs 2 for 10. A Sexton ( 3-0-18-0) replaced Hools who could not repeat the feats of the last 3 games, bowling a wicket maiden as his first over, these figures would have been different had the catches been taken. N Clarke replaced Secy bowling a very good spell of 3 overs 1 for 8.
A Russell bowled out the other end with a good spell producing his best figures of the season so far 3 overs 3 for 15. We kept Chorley down to a reasonable total of 90 for whom L Sweeney scored 43
A Weetman and S Bibby opened the innings, both scoring steadily, Spen (8) was first to go,he was replaced by A Hooley (4). Ben Batty (1) was the next in.
At the half way point we had reached 32 for the loss of 3 wickets, Alex was joined by N Clarke (7), these two started to move the score on at a better pace.
When Nick was out he was replaced by D Tracey (5), We now required 13 from the last 2 overs. the next over went for 8 due to more good work by Alex.
The last over, 5 required to win, Dec facing and unfortunately no runs off the first 2 balls then Dec drove the ball and the fielder picked up and threw, a direct hit ,Dec was run out. J Pope came in, 3 balls left, 5 required to win. Alex got a 2 then failed to connect , last ball 3 to win/2 to tie...he drove the ball a single was gained the game was over! we lost by just 1 run, Alex's innings ended  not out on 49.
Under 15s Thursday 18th June

Thursday 18th June Home V New Longton

Batting first Adam Sexton joining Alex Weetman. at the top of the order, the pair started slowly seeing off some good accurate bowling from the New Longton opening pair. Progress started to be made around the 9th over, the 50 partnership came around the 11th over, Alex now opening up hitting 2 sixes in 1 over and the partnership of 79, the best of the season was over when Alex retired on 50.went on to make 33 before being run out. Adam Hooley with a brisk 22 took us to a large target of 118.
owever, the wheels almost came off and although the bowling was steady, the first wicket to fall was a run out, a direct hit by Spencer.
The New longton batsmen were making good steady progress,Spencer was next up to bowl taking a wicket in his first over.Josh was the last of the bowlers to be used. With New Longton now pushing hard to reach our total they started to take chances, this lead to another run out Adam Russell picking up at cover and throwing in for Alex to take the bails off. The New Longton opening batsman Procter had reached 50 and had to retire. The last over 13 required Josh to bowl,a couple of singles were scored, last ball 7 required, the ball was hit, only 1 scored the ball was back in Alex's hands game over we had won by 4. Spens figures 3-0-19-1 and Josh 3-0-17-1 were the pick of an otherwise poor all round fielding performance

U15s Thursday 25th June

Away V Wrea Green

Batting first again and another good opening partnership of 42 Adam S being caught at mid off for 11 with score on 42. 61 at the half way stage, a big score looked possible, Alex once again dominated the bowling before being caught having scored 42,Hools once again scored quickly untill caught when on 27. A partnership between Josh Pope and Nick Clarke pushed the score to 117 for 6 at the close of the innings.
Wrea Green started slowly, good bowling from Shell(3-0-13-0) and Adam Russell until his last over which ended up an 11 ball over.Nick bowled his 4 overs for 19 without  much luck.Adam S bowled 1 over for 10 taking a wicket on his 3rd ball,Hools bowled 2 overs taking 1 for 16 neither bowling very well but also not helped by some poor fielding.Spen and Josh finished the innings, Josh bowling the last over and wrea green requiring 13, only 1 run scored and Josh took 3 wickets with his last 3 balls, a HATRICK well done, we won by 12
Thursday 2nd July Away V Preston

Preston elected to bat, starting slowly they lost their first wicket in the fifth over, good work by Alex behind the stumps stumping the batsman off the bowling of Adam S (3-0-14-1).The next wicket came by means of a run out, a direct hit by Adam S.Spencer Bibby (4-2-3-1) bowling very well was joined by Josh Pope (5 -1-16-1 )  who had a good catch taken off his bowling by Nick Clarke in the deep.Dec Tracey (1-0-3-0) and Adam Hooley who after opening the innings, closed it taking a wicket in his last over(3-1-7-1), we had restricted Preston to the very gettable score of 58 with a good bowling and improved fielding performance.
Alex Weetman and Adam S opened, neither troubled the scorer, it has to be said that Alex's decision was  v questionable. This brought Hools and Spen together who carried on the good work they had done for the U17s a few days earlier, Hools holed out having scored 19, this brought in Dec who finished the game with a pull shot through mid wicket for 4. Spen finished 24 not out and Dec 14 not

Thursday 9th July Home V Fulwood and Broughton

Fulwood batted first,a combination of a good opening pair who both retired having scored 50 and a very lackluster, lethargic fielding display helped the visitors reach the largest total to be scored against us this season- 130. Alex and Adam S started the task of chasing this high total, both scoring freely soon took the score past 50.Adam was first out having scored 17,Hools next up trying to force the pace was bowled for 1,this brought in Spen, who along with Alex upped the run rate. Alex was run out with a direct hit going for a second run, he had scored 48. Dec Tracey next in was stumped having scored 2. Nick Clarke was next to join Spen this pair took us past 100 before Spen was bowled having scored 13. Adam Russell next in . Last over 15 required to win, Nick hit 5 of the first 3 balls, this left Adam requiring 10 from 3, he hits a 2  then another, last ball 6 required Adam hit it well it went for 4, we had lost by 1, a great effort to recover an atrocious fielding display!.

Under 17`s

Under 17’s League Match v Gregson Lane

At last the U17’s got their first match away on a warm summer’s night. After winning the toss we elected to bat. After losing an early wicket a couple of good partnerships between T Wilkinson (22) - A Weetman (51 Not Out) - A Kenyon (25) set us up with a good target 137- 5. D Hewson and D Flannagan opened the bowling both taking the 2 openers and leaving Gregson Lane struggling 2-3 off the first 3 overs.  With 6 overs left captain T Wilkinson gave the 2 U13 players (A Russell & D Tracey) an over each, both taking wickets, also young J Pope bowled well taking a wicket maiden along with A Sexton. An excellent performance by a very young U17 team bowling a poor Gregson Lane team out for 53.

Under 17’s League Match v Chorley

Won the toss and put Chorley in. New boy Rob Cobley opened the bowling with a good 2-6 off 3 supported well from the other end by Danny Flannagan 1-6 off 3 backed up by Tom Wilkinson and Steve Gilbert with some outstanding fielding by Alex Kenyon who pounced on everything that came near him. Chorley’s running between the wickets was poor  resulting in 3 run outs, restricting them to 82 for 7. Tom Wilkinson (37) and Dave Hewson (17) got us off to a good start chasing down Chorley’s target. With batsmen 3 and 4 not troubling the score book Alex Kenyon and Steve Gilbert came in moving us to within 1 run of Chorley’s score with 3 overs to go.  Danny Flannagan came in and with his first ball dispatched it for 4 winning us the game with comfort. Once again an excellent performance.

Under 17’s League Match v Leyland

Leyland won the toss and elected to bat. We put on a good performance with the ball considering Leyland’s two foreign openers. Tom Foster (ex Eccleston) put on a good partnership with Henry Thompson (ex Penwortham); considering both are Lancashire players our opening bowlers kept them quiet. Tom Wilkinson and Dave Hewson got us off to a good start chasing down Leyland’s 128 but we were always behind the run rate.  Alex Weetman and Danny Flannagan put on a good partnership off the last 4 over’s putting on 36 taking us to a respectful  total of 94 without losing any more wickets. Take out Leyland’s 2 openers I felt we would of comfortably beaten them.

Monday 29th June Under 17’s League Match v Preston

With only 5 Preston players arriving on time and the rest of their team lost in Ormskirk (don’t ask) Preston won the toss and elected to field with only 5 players, the rest of their team arrived after the 1st over. We started off fairly well with D Hewson getting us off to a quick start with 22. Than came a mini collapse over a 4 over spell loosing 3 wickets for 5 runs. T Aitkenhead came to the crease and settled things for a while scoring a quick 14. A Hooley (26 not out) and S Bibby (30 not out) took us to respectful 99 for 5, putting on 44 runs in 7 overs. D Flannagan and D Hewson opened the bowling both taking 1 wicket a piece with some good bowling and both should have had at least another wicket. A Hooley and J Pope came on and kept it tight without any success before T Aitkinhead came on and took 4-6 in 3.3 overs supported by Captain for the night A Kenyon taking 2-15 with some good fielding from D Flannagan to force a run out, knocking them over for 68. An excellent team performance.
7th July V Croston
A must win game saw us insert the opposition and although Galliers and Trafford gave them a good start, wth this Croston team when you get one, you get the pack of cards to fall. 64-2 became 72 ao D Hewson 3-6, Tom Wilkinson 3-16 and 2 each for Hools and Spenny did the damage. Alex had 3 stumpings. Although both were dropped behind, Dave Hewson in particular struck the ball hard for 44no and Wilkie got into the teens and Rob Cobley finished the match in 7.3 overs. Not a bad result against a team promising (yet again) to beat us.

8th July v Penwortham (away)

On a pitch were you could spit and reach one of the boundaries Penwortham batted first.                     D Flannagan bowled well without any success getting the batsmen in all sorts of trouble with lucky inside and outside edges that missed the stumps by millimetres. On came D Hewson who in his 2nd over took 2 wickets with some good wicket keeping by A Weetman, D Hewson ending up with 2-11. A Kenyon chipped in with 2 and T Wilkinson with 1. D Flannagan was sharp in the field running out one of their players with a direct hit, some excellent fielding and batsmen indecisions resulted in 2 more run outs. We got off to a poor start losing our 1st wicket for 1 run, things started to look better until A Weetman Holed one out to a missed time shot, Then came R Cobley  to join an impressive  .  D Hewson in the middle putting on a 54 partnership D Hewson getting himself out for 45. We than lost a further 3 wickets for 6 runs before A Sexton joined D Flannagan in the middle still needing 29 runs off 6 over’s, A Sexton batted with confidentce and aggression with some good running between the stumps and took us to the target with 1 over and a ball remaining.  Tonight’s win has put us in the quarter finals with a home draw. Well done lads.
