2009 Meyler Cup Final

The 2009 Meyler Cup Final was held at Eccleston on the 15th August between Fulwood and Broughton and Longridge.

The day started early for some, arriving at the ground just after 9am to find a sodden and severely damaged pitch, square and run ups, after the day before, so it was all hands to the pump to repair the damage as well as possible, under the watchful instructional eye of our chairman. With Tony Goodman setting about cutting the outfield, and Dave Flannagan pretending he was Pablo Picasso setting up new directional signs things soon got moving.  Carol Ashcroft and Elaine set about putting up the gazeebo with help from Jordan Banks and Harry Norris, and were soon joined by the junior Weety`s (major shock to the system for Alex....its called work!!!), and Jamie. Meanwhile Weety senior set about cutting and extending the square to Oval type sizes whilst Barney collected all the cut bits......! Wally Bromley`s got his woodwork kit out and is helping improve the stiles over the fence......
Time was ebbing away and the gazeebo was  a nightmare....seating was laid out by the junior Weetys, Danny Flan and Eddie. The gazeebo was finally erected, as were the two smaller tents, which allowed the Rigybe`s to set up their BBQ. Across on the pitch Jim was rolling  and marking the wicket, and Weety was still extending the square......

12 o`clock......oh no...two buses pull up......its Longridge!!! Pink cowboy hats (that was Kyle) and a claxon......who said you had to come from the inner cities to be a chav ;-} ....then they had the cheek to go to the pub when we have a bar!!!! ! 10 minutes later the first of the Fulwood crew turn up.....Jamie` gets the bacon butties going for all the workers, and the ladies are on with the teas..... Brads decides to move one of the tents and then clears off......the players come out to practice....Geggors turns up slightly bow legged after his `luv in ` in Anglesey, with his missus who`s even more bow legged......Greggors helps get the cage out....Goody gets off his mower, and Dave Flan helps set up the microphone, and the first cars arrive.......Alan
turns up with the tables and chairs, and Alex has to do some manual labour.................

1pm people start getting cleaned up except for the ladies who are on with the food.......first signs of bbq going and takings at the bar.......ooops its a 1.30 start not 2pm as we thought......no wonder thy turned iup at 12   duh!!!!
F+B win toss and choose to bat...........Mmmmm!!!??? Match starts on time and Mat Ash and Potter turn up.  Immediately the Longridge crew are up and running, the claxon outdoing Weety on the mike....F+B are struggling averaging about 0.75 runs per over and a couple of wickets fall, Andy Emmo shows his face...Alex is struggling to keep control of the random parking of cars and Potter gets b*lllocked off Brads for not parking in line, so takes his car home in a girly hissy fit........Eddie takes over form Weety on the mike to introduce some `zap` into the commentry......wickets keep falling, Eddie forget`s what he`s told everytime a wicket falls.......teas are still being made.......more drink is being consummed. At drinks F+B are in trouble, and 8 overs later they are 50-8. Suddenly two batsmen decide to bat, and the score moves on to give us the possibility of getting near a ton but the last two wickets go and they are all out for 90 amidst much muttering about the wicket.

Tea is finally consummed although there was more than enough for three times the crowd........where were all the other teams players and supporters for what is the league`s premier cup?  Greggors and his missus go..........;-}.....holding hands........! Jamie eats more chicken wings than an Alabama redneck.........Les sets too on the John Smiths.........Adam Sexton spots the food.............. !
Longridge set off in reply and lose a couple of wickets to raise a cheer from their growing band of supporters, and much to the derision of the howling crew from the east of the county..........a couple of lusty blows from Kenyon including a rather large 6 over straight extra seem to be taking away the game.....but no F+B fight back with 3 quick wickets to leave Longridge at 51-5....game on? No, F+B shell some catches....Eddie leaves to go and play golf, Hayes` turns up looking smart (and slightly late to cut the outfield) Elaine`s trying to sell a calander to someone from Longridge...........
Stew and Speaky turn up  (isn`t Speaky looking more and more like Sandy Lyle?) Emily meanwhile is in seventh heaven in charge of the sweety shop
and the cream teas are going well (well better than Longridge)...........the bar`s flowing, Dave and Goody keep the barrells flowing, and Brads takes charge of the bar...but then the match takes a different turn...two young lads get in, mixing watchful defence with some big blows and slowly the game tilts conclusively the way of Longridge............GAME OVER! Longridge win the cup.....guess what......... its noisy!!!!!!

Fair play to them though they were the better team on the day. Its presentation time, Elaine`s told to pipe down so people outside can hear the league chairman over the microphone..........everyones had a good day...well apart from F+B..........much celebration from Longridge deserved man of match for Paul Holden (is he old enough to drink that bottle he was presented with?............)

Time to clean up, Gazeebo down, tents down, chairs stacked away...covers straight on the wicket!!! Longridge are celebrating.....the bar is still doing its job (ie Making the club money to invest in new facilities in the future )...........its getting ontowards 8pm and finally F+B go.........Longridge are still here......Dave Flann`s slightly p*ssed as he gathers the cones up........but its been a good day, a really good day!

So well done to all who turned up and helped.......in case people are a bit thick you can`t run an event like this without people being there to do all this work, so for those who were`nt on holiday and who didn`t show up don`t say a word.................
